In 1983 he graduated from Shanxi Agricultural University. He is Deputy Director of Shanghai Systems Biomedical Research Center. He started the earliest systematic research on microbial molecular ecology in China. He has done a lot of innovative work in complex microbial community structure analysis techniques and statistical computing methods.
