College of Veterinary Medicine
The College of Veterinary Medicine of Shanxi Agricultural University traces its origin to 1928 with the formation of the Animal Husbandry Group under the Agricultural Department of the private Oberlin Shansi Memorial (Mingxian) School, and has evolved along with a multi-stage journey from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, the Department of Veterinary Medicine, the Department of Veterinary Medicine to become the College of Animal Science and Technology. In June 2020, the veterinary team of the former School of Animal Science and Technology of Shanxi Agricultural University, the veterinary team of the former Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, and the Institute of Feed and Veterinary Medicine of Shanxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences were integrated to establish the College of Veterinary Medicine of Shanxi Agricultural University, which was included in the secondary pilot legal entities of the "University driven by colleges" reform. With a solid academic foundation, a highly competitive faculty and a high level of scientific research, the College has born fruitful research results, cultivated a wealth of talents, and formed a talent training system covering undergraduates, master's, and doctoral students.
The College has convened high-standard teachers and experts and fostered a large number of talents. It has a total of 135 faculty members, including 120 professional and technical personnel and 38 practicing veterinarians. There are 29 technical personnel with senior professional titles, 38 with associate professional titles, 17 doctoral supervisors, and 66 master's supervisors. 83% of the full-time teachers hold a doctor’s degree and there are more than 30 national, provincial, and ministerial talents including distinguished professors awarded "Yangtze River Scholars", winners of the “National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars” and national talents for the “Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Project”. One national teaching team and three provincial teaching teams are based here. In the past five years, the College has undertaken more than 150 national, provincial, and municipal projects, with scientific research funds of more than 60 million yuan. Among more than 450 academic papers published by our staff, more than 260 of them have been indexed in SCI. Besides, there are more than 20 monographs and textbooks and over 40 authorized invention patents, utility model patents, and software copyrights. The College has successively received 14 awards including the first and second-place prizes for Progress in Science and Technology awarded by the Ministry of Education, the first and second-place prizes for Natural Science in Shanxi Province, the first and second-place prize for Shanxi Teaching Achievements, and the first and second-place prize for the Shanxi Teaching Competition.
The College has enjoyed academic excellence boosted by competitive and distinctive disciplines. Leveraging the two campuses in Taigu and Longcheng (Taiyuan) and many other scientific research platforms, the College established three teaching departments: the Department of Basic Veterinary Medicine, the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, the Department of Preventive Veterinary Medicine, and five research centers: the Research Center for Preventive Veterinary Medicine, the Research Center for Basic Veterinary Medicine, the Research Center for Clinical Veterinary Medicine, the Research Center for Veterinary Pharmacology, and the Research Center for Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. Veterinary medicine is a first-level discipline for doctoral degree granting and a unit for professional doctoral degree granting, and it is now a key discipline and preponderant discipline in Shanxi Province. There is one postdoctoral research station in veterinary medicine, one provincial key laboratory, nine provincial scientific research platform bases and one university-level research institute. In addition, the college has built several experimental training bases such as the Animal Hospital (Veterinary Hospital), the Research Center for Animal Disease Diagnosis, and the Monitoring Center for Major Animal Epidemic Diseases. The college offers numerous undergraduate programs including Veterinary Medicine (Combined Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree Program), Veterinary Medicine, Animal and Plant Quarantine (animal quarantine oriented) and Veterinary Public Health, etc., of which Veterinary Medicine is listed in the first batch of National First-class Undergraduate Programs, National Characteristic Majors, Provincial Brand Majors and Provincial Preponderant Majors. The seven-year program of Veterinary Medicine (Combined Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree Program) and five-year programs of Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Public Health are set for the first batch of students enrolled in the College, while the second batch can enroll in the four-year program of Animal and Plant Quarantine (animal quarantine oriented). The Veterinary Medicine Undergraduate Experimental Center serves as a national demonstration center for experimental teaching featuring a national first-class course and six provincial first-class courses.
The College has been committed to cultivating talents with outstanding abilities and good moral characters. Now there are 1425 students studying in the College including 1014 undergraduates, 411 doctoral and master students, and 5 foreign students. Adhering to the teaching law of higher education and the law of talent growth, the College takes moral education as its foundation, shoulders the responsibility to promote and boost agriculture and proactively implements the policy of “undergraduate education-centered university development” and promotes “Four Returns”. According to the needs of the society for talents and combined with students' employment intentions and career planning, the College takes the lead in implementing the multi-level talent training mode of "three stages, three types of courses, and three kinds of talents" among agricultural universities across the country. At the same time, the College steps up to promote international and domestic exchanges and cooperation, actively carries out social services, expands resources, and keeps improving the education quality. It has given birth to more than 10,000 outstanding talents for the society such as Gao Fu, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, well-known scholars such as Professor Dong Changsheng, Professor Wang Jundong, Professor Li Hongquan, and many outstanding cadres and social elites such as Li Yuanping, Wang Zhongwen, and Liu Wenge. A series of remarkable achievements have been made in the research of animal cell molecular regulation and bioengineering, environmental veterinary medicine and animal health, new-type Chinese veterinary medicine and biological agents, diagnosis, comprehensive prevention, control of animal diseases, etc. The College has made significant contributions to the modernization of agriculture in Shanxi province and to the whole country.
The College has stepped up efforts to build practice bases and has cultivated innovative talents through practice. It highly values the integration of teaching theory and practice, which has been proved to be an effective way to foster practical talents. Over the years, the College has kept a close watch on higher education development and industrial needs, innovated basic educating forms by exploring the "college-enterprise 'inspirational class', college-enterprise 'joint laboratory', 'on-post practice', professional skills competition, ability improvement project for ‘mass entrepreneurship and innovation’ and 'team building for innovation and entrepreneurship" in order to cultivate real talents. It has integrated ideological and political education, professional practice ability, innovative and entrepreneurial education, and social responsibility education to gradually create the distinctive college brand that combines education work with “the Five-in-one Strategy” featuring the integration of the government, industry, university, research institute, and user. At present, it has signed joint education agreements with many well-known enterprises such as Muyuan Food Co., Ltd., Dabeinong Group, Zhengbang Group, Daxiang Group, Beijing Center Technology Co., Ltd., New Ruipeng Pet Healthcare Group, etc., and set up college-enterprise inspirational classes, college-enterprise joint laboratories and enterprise scholarships. Every year, the College can provide internship positions for “mass entrepreneurship and innovation” and “on-post practice” and provide "innovative and entrepreneurial team reward fund" for students who have made outstanding achievements in innovation and entrepreneurship work. In recent years, a number of national and provincial training projects for college students’ innovation and entrepreneurship have been approved, and the College has been awarded numerous prizes including the grand and first prizes for groups in the National "Eagle Cup" Veterinary Skill Competition for Small Animals and the second prize for groups in the National "Center Cup" Veterinary Professional Skill Competition for College Students. Recent years have seen the steady increase of the passing rate of National Postgraduate Entrance Exam in our college, which has reached 60.2% in 2021.
Standing at a starting point in history, the College will firmly uphold the spirit of Shanxi Agricultural University to "advocate education, promote agricultural development and revitalize the university through arduous efforts" and make great strides towards the goal of building a "first-class high-level research-based college in China"!
